Southview’s Top Ten Tips
1. NO EXCEPTIONS FOR BOOSTERS.
Annual Vaccinations are essential for disease prevention in your pets. Even if your dog isn’t meeting other dogs or leaving your house or garden they can still be in danger of catching Leptospirosis (jaundice) from rats. They have a declining immunity once their booster vaccinations lapse.
2. KENNEL COUGH OUTBREAK
Kennel Cough is now commonplace in Clonmel and as our new kennel cough vaccine has a twelve-month duration why not vaccinate your dog when he is getting his annual booster.
3. WORM PREVENTION.
Worm your dog and cat every three months. Stronghold and advocate do not treat tapeworm so we recommend you give a worm tablet or a PROFENDER spot-on to those cats that refuse to take tablets.
4.FLEAS EVEN ON POSH PETS
The spot on flea treatments should be repeated every month. Fleas can be left by stray cats, rabbits and hedgehogs and will live in the garden and hedgerows during the summer so even dogs that don’t socialise with others can pick up fleas.
5. BEAT THE RECESSION
Make your pet recession proof by insuring him for veterinary fees. It is most disappointing for owners when cost is what prohibits care for their pet. For new pet owners Pet Plan with Alliance offer 6weeks free cover with a first vaccination.
6. WEIGHT WATCHERS FOR PETS
A significant number of the pets we see are overweight. Healthy living for pets is as important as it is for us. We offer free nurse consultations with nutritional advice and hints on weight control through dieting and exercise. If your pet is overweight it will contribute to heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, back problems and breathlessness all which give him less quality of life.
7. SMILE PLEASE
teethOn a daily basis we see many dogs and cats suffering from gum disease and loose teeth, with their long-suffering owners putting up with their bad breath kisses! We can treat dental disease with a dental descale and extractions but these require general anaesthetics and painful surgery for your pet. There is no doubt that preventative dental care, using special diets, dental sticks and dental products is the way to go.
8. CARE FOR THE ELDERLY
As your loved family pet gets older and starts to show signs of wear and tear we can diagnose early illness through our routine wellness-screening, blood tests and urinalysis. Early diagnosis will hopefully improve your pet’s chances of treatment and a full cure.
9. ACHING JOINTS
We have had great success with a course of 4 CARTROPHEN injections for arthritis in dogs. Many dogs get at least 6months of pain relief and joint improvement. We now have cartrophen reminders every 6 months before your dog slows down again.
10. BETTER PROTECTION FOR KITTY
Now with the increased prevalence of Feline Leukaemia in Clonmel we are suggesting to cat owners to introduce LEUCOGEN vaccinations at their cat’s annual booster visit. Your cat will need a second vaccination for the first year but after that it will be annual boosters as with the cat flu.
